Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery

The same basic cataract procedure has been done for several decades without a significant breakthrough in technology – until now! For years our patients have asked if cataracts can be removed with the help of a laser and our answer was always unfortunately no. Now we are truly thrilled to be able to answer differently. Dropless™ Cataract Surgery

Eye drops have always been needed before and after cataract surgery to help prevent infection and reduce inflammation. They are used up to four times per day for a few weeks, which some patients find to be inconvenient. Other patients have a difficult time instilling eye drops in their own eyes. Additionally, the drops can cost up to several hundred dollars, depending on a patient’s individual insurance. For all of these reasons, we offer the ability to administer a mixture of medications at the time of cataract surgery that can significantly reduce, and even eliminate, the number and frequency of drops that are used. This ability makes cataract surgery even more convenient for our patients.

During the Procedure

Cataract surgery is performed using a microsurgical technique called “phacoemulsification” where the cataract is gently broken up and suctioned to remove. The eye is completely numbed using eye drops, which eliminates the need for a painful injection. Small incisions are made around the cornea (the clear dome-shaped surface that covers the front of the eye) where a tiny ultrasonic probe is inserted into the eye by the physician. The incisions often do not require stitching due to their small size.

Once the cataract is removed, an Intraocular Lens (IOL) Implant is inserted inside the eye to refocus the light rays. There are many types of IOL’s which will help you regain your youthful vision after cataract surgery. Our physicians will discuss with you the best IOL option for you.
